A District Built Around a Deployment Schedule

Muroc Joint Unified serves the families of Edwards Air Force Base, which means it operates on a different clock than every other Area 7 district. Kids can arrive or leave mid-year because a parent got new orders. The base’s own School Liaison Office exists specifically to help families navigate “transitioning military and civilian children/youth” through duty-station changes and PCS moves — including credit transfers across what can be more than a dozen local school districts serving the base.

That’s a genuinely different operating environment than Tehachapi or Ridgecrest, where a family that enrolls in September is overwhelmingly likely to still be there in June. A district serving a military base has to build for churn as a permanent feature, not an exception.

The School Liaison Office also flags deployment and separation as real disruptions to a student’s year — not just an administrative footnote, but something that shows up in a kid’s classroom experience while a parent is gone.

A trustee representing Muroc has to understand that this district’s baseline challenge isn’t the same as anyone else’s in Area 7. Consistency, credit transfers, and support during deployment aren’t nice extras here — they’re the actual job.
