One Board, Seven Very Different Emergencies

People hear “Kern County Board of Education, Area 7” and picture one district with one set of problems. It isn’t. It’s seven districts, and right now those seven districts aren’t even having the same emergency.

Tehachapi Unified is watching its reserves drain — down from a projected $9.46 million shortfall to reserves that are expected to fall to roughly $6.4 million by the end of 2026-27, edging toward the state’s legal minimum. Mojave Unified has had to close schools outright when staffing ran short. Sierra Sands, up in Ridgecrest, is in the middle of closing one middle school and opening four new ones in the same year. Meanwhile Southern Kern Unified in Rosamond has the opposite problem — growing so fast off new housing that its own superintendent says the elementary schools “are not going to be able to hold” the students coming in.

Add Caliente Union, one of the smallest districts in the entire county, leaning on a decades-old consortium just to afford a school nurse. Add Muroc Joint Unified, built around Edwards Air Force Base, where kids can transfer mid-year on a moment’s notice because a parent got new orders. Add El Tejon up in the mountains, where the district’s own paperwork says the internet is too unreliable for hotspots to fix.

Seven districts. Seven different problems. That’s exactly why this seat can’t be managed from a spreadsheet in Bakersfield once a month. It has to be managed by someone who actually goes to all seven — which is the only way I know how to do this job.
